Best of the Internet for Genealogists
9 January 2000 |
DearREADERS,
This award has been presented, usually on Sunday, since 1995, when I first began publishing this column for the Genealogy Forum on AOL. This week's
recipients may post the award logo on their web site, with a link to this announcement
page.

SOUNDEX CARD EXTRACTION FORM
http://www.genealogy-mall.com/sndxcard.htm
This page is linked to a page at www.FamilySearch.org, and provides
a "fill-in the blank" reproduction of the Soundex Cards created for the 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 US federal census records. While you may
create a photocopy from the Soundex microfilm, its also a good idea to transcribe the entry on this form.
SLN METAL SIGNS & MEMORIAL PLAQUES
http://www.slngroup.com/
An interesting source for memorial plaques, "walls of honor" including photo etchings on brass. From their site: "The SLN Group specializes in metal etching, water jet cutting, engraving and metal finishing. Memorial plaques, control panels, safety signs, ADA and Braille signage are available in any metal, including stainless steel, in sizes to 5x16 feet. Also available through The SLN Group are genealogy plaques (family trees) for families."
Bibliofind
http://www.bibliofind.com
This just in from one of my Monday night chat regulars, "Eagle" 1eagel@prodigy.net
"FYI -- Found this interesting concept in finding publications and information. I was looking for a gift for the Archivist of the Diocese of Orange and Mission San Juan Capistrano. I used the search for the words Mission San Juan Capistrano and found several interesting publications within the spending frame I had indicated."
REMEMBER THE MAINE - Spanish
American War
http://www.smplanet.com/imperialism/remember.html
Preserving the history of this famous Spanish-American War disaster, from the
web site: "In the captain's cabin, Charles Sigsbee sat at a table writing a letter to his wife. The trouble in Cuba, he wrote, would soon be over. The new Spanish governor of the island seemed to have the situation under control. During the three weeks that the Maine had been in Havana, Captain Sigsbee had seen no sign of Cuban rebels." See also a map of Cuba, stereoscopic pic of the Maine, and more!

CRIBBS-KREBS-CREPS-KRIBBS Family History
http://www.geocities.com/cribbswh/cribbs.htm
Bill Cribbs cribbswh@wwbbs.net has been busy trying to make obituaries, not just his personal
family history easier for you to locate on the web. You may click to his Obituary Links Page and use a search engine. Bill has also provided search engines also for Ancestry.com and AskJeeves.com, as well as links to state information he's found helpful on the web.
Regarding Bill's immigrant ancestor "The Michael Krebs (Cribbs) family moved from [Germany] in the early 1700s to Montgomery County, PA. His grandchildren moved westward to the
Westmoreland- Indiana- Armstrong county area. Many Cribbs remain in this area to this day. My particular leg of this family moved further westward to help pioneer New Philadelphia, Tuscawaras Co., Ohio. Several Cribbs sons moved southward to Alabama. It was about this time that slavery was active, thus the black Cribbs family was begun. "
If we all provided pages of our ancestors and related states, a little like the scope of what Bill is working on, the internet would be much easier to understand!
BOWER FAMILY HOMESTEAD
http://www.bowercommunity.com/homestead
Creative genealogist, Colleen Pustola ladyaudris@earthlink.net
uses the metaphor of an old prairie homestead to present the information at her site. Click on the "front door" and you can go to the parlor, kitchen, children's rooms, etc. to discover more about her Bower family collection. Hidden upstairs in the attic are transcriptions of old Bower family documents such as: vital records, probate records, obituaries, census records, military records, biographies and personals.
DAVID LEGACY
http://www.angelfire.com/or/davidlegacy/index.html
Brava to Robin Carvallo RCarvallo@aol.com
for preserving her family history on her web site titled David Legacy for the David Families of France, Canada and Louisiana. You'll find census, marriage and death records are included in this ongoing genealogy project. Connect with other David family members by reading up on reunion information and the
David Legacy guestbook.
Great job! I wish everyone would put their genealogy and some photos & supporting documents on the internet! -- A great example to us all!
