Best of the Internet for Genealogists Award 1/23/2000
|
DearREADERS,
The following web sites have been recommended for the Best of the Internet for Genealogists Award, and as such are invited to display the award logo and a hyperlink to this column.
Translating Dictionaries
http://dictionaries.travlang.com/
From: a-hurwitz@ti.com
(Hurwitz, Angie)
DearMYRTLE,
"While trying to research my Dutch ancestors, I searched your website for
Holland and Netherlands and found http://www.dearmyrtle.com/my981163.htm
.
This article discussed someone's website which was written in Dutch. One of the links this person had on his website was a translator website. When I
went to the main page:
http://dictionaries.travlang.com/
there are translators for German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Friesian, Afrikaans, Hungarian, Czech,
Esperanto, and Latin. It will translate from any of these languages to and from English and to many other languages. I have heard of programs that
will do this, but had never seen anything on the web."
Jewish Resources http://www.genealogyforum.com/gfaol/resource/Jewish/index.htm
Expanding its internet presence, the Genealogy Forum (AOL Keyword: roots) provides a great page of links and advice to those searching their Jewish family trees. From the site:
"This information has been put together to help you with your Jewish research. You will find resources, historical information, wonderful downloadable files, links to useful websites, links to the Jewish message boards, and a link to the Jewish Community Online.
Be sure to check the chat topics so you can join others for the Jewish chats (and many others) we have scheduled. "

We've got some inquisitive Canadian researchers attending chats in the Genealogy Forum (AOL Keyword: roots.) Check the chat
schedule for a live (and lively) discussion, but I digress. Several have been talking about a what they call "a new Canadian Center online." I also note
this was the subject of Cyndi's "Pick of the Week in November 24, 1999 Genealogy Bulletin.
See: http://www.genealogybulletin.com/archives/
On reviewing this site, there are some interesting links for each province, as well as personal pages, archives, Cemeteries, Military, United Empire Loyalist info, listings for organizations and societies as well as searchable links. I especially liked the listing for locations (per province) of archives, libraries or personal pages for Loyalist researchers. It leads me to the next award winner this week.

United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada

The Loyalist Gazette is just one of the offerings of this site, which meets the criteria for
disseminating useful genealogical information.
TalkCity.com's Genealogy Chat
http://www.talkcity.com
Thanks to <cyndihow@oz.net> (Cyndi Howells) for her posting to CyndisList-L@rootsweb.com, a public genealogy mail list, for the following info. It is news to me!
"GENEALOGY CHAT ON INTERNET
The Hearst Corporation, owner of over 500 newspapers nationwide,
HoustonChronicle.com, the Chronicle s online website and TalkCity.com , a national chat hosting website, will sponsor a genealogy chat from 8 PM to
9 PM on both Monday January 10 and Monday January 24.
Mic Barnette will be the host of the Chat. He is an author, lecturer, and
a genealogical instructor. He writes an award winning weekly genealogical column in the This Week section of the Houston (Texas) Chronicle. His column may be read at http://barnettesbooks.com. Mic is a member of the
Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sons of the Republic of Texas, a number of genealogically related societies and is an Admiral in the Texas Navy.
To join the Genealogy Chat go to http://www.chron.com/chat
or http://www.talkcity.com. A greeting on the website will prompt chatters to sign-in as a member or as a guest and will give further instructions on
how to download the chat software to join in the fun. Both members and
guests are able to ask questions and see all the action. Those that sign
in as members on the Chronicle s website will receive the Chronicle's
Weekly Online E-Newsletter with schedules of other chats and activities."
DearREADERS,
I wish more of the "traditional" internet chat rooms sites would feature genealogy topics. After all, millions of folks around the world are into family history.
Unfortunately it takes a little while for newbie genealogists or newbie
netters to learn about Cyndi's List, RootsWeb, USGenWeb, WorldGenWeb, Ancestry.com, etc. This would be another way to "train 'techies' up in the way they should go!"
Myrt :)
Personal Computer Rentals
http://www.pcrrent.com/locations.asp
When the subject of renting a laptop for detailed research trips came up in our chat last Monday evening, one of our regulars (old' brain
fails me here!) mentioned this web site. Until laptops are as affordable as desktops, this might be a good alternative for researchers!

LANGLEY FAMILY Genealogy Page
http://members.aol.com/langleyfamily/
Ann Langley-Striegel <LangleyFamily@aol.com> takes advantage of her free AOL web space to provide this site
"dedicated to collecting and sharing information on the Langley family of southern Maryland and all its branches. Other surnames include: Murphy, Bridgett, Jameson, Higgs, Farrell, Osburn(e)/Osborn(e),Montgomery."
From the site:
"I began this genealogy project with my children. We started slow and thanks to many family members and friends we have been able to expand our family tree greatly. We hope to publish all our findings in a book for the families to keep."
