Library of Congress Follow-Up

Good morning, Pat. "Hon," huh? You really are familiar with Baltimore. Very nice column on Baltimore area researching. I will send a note to the querier inviting him to visit the Baltimore FHC [Family History Center.]

Suggestion for a future column: The (relatively new) online catalog at Library of Congress. You might emphasize that while thousands of books are on open shelves in Local History and Genealogy, there are MILLIONS that must be requested and fetched -- takes about an hour.

And a chance for you to do a good deed! The signup for a researcher card (required to have books fetched) "usta" be a quick, simple matter because the researcher card room was a few steps from the researcher entrance, then a few steps more to LH&G room. No more. Since June, it's a LONG walk through tunnels to a different building to get the researcher card. This is an unnecessary difficulty for a new researcher who may be elderly or handicapped.

The good deed, would be to mention in your column that this situation has developed. (Feel free to deplore, if you wish.) I've complained, but a heads-up from a nationally read columnist such as DearMYRTLE would certainly be more effective. Go ahead, rattle that cage.

Cheers, Dolly Ziegler in Baltimore (Bawlmer, that is)

Just one or two caveats:

  • The Library of Congress does NOT participate in the interlibrary loan service, so you must view the materials in person.

  • Contrary to popular belief, the Library of Congress does not own a copy of every book ever published.

Additionally, the Library of Congress has a significant manuscript division in addition to the published maps and books on its shelves and in the back stacks. Also, if you plan to publish a family history, definitely send the LOC a copy!
