Swedish Genealogical Research

DearREADERS,
Thursday night I met with seven women who are interested in doing more genealogy research.

With regret and confusion, one mentioned that some of her ancestors had come to the United States from Sweden during the latter part of the 19th century.  She felt the research task was impossible to do while living here in the US.

She need not despair, there are numerous resources available for finding documents about her ancestors both here in the US and back in the homeland.

For Further Reading:

WorldGenWeb - Sweden: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wgsweden/

Research How-To Guides  - A great place to start is the SourceGuide's "Tracing Immigrant Origins Research Outline" located at: http://www.familysearch.org/sg/Tracing_Immigrant_Origins.html.  It is especially useful for explaining:

  • records in the place of arrival (US)
  • records in the place of departure (foreign country)

Additional online "how-to" resources at FamilySearch.org include:

There is also the Family History Library Catalog, an index to over 2 million microfilm, and hundreds of thousands of maps & books about people and places throughout the world.  Its located at: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp  Once you locate an desirable item in the catalog, print out the film notes, and go to your local LDS Family History Center to view the film.  It more than likely will be necessary to order in the microfilm for a nominal $3-4 for a short term loan.

When using the catalog, specify Sweden and find 198 topics, where the first 80 include:
