DearREADERS,
As a volunteer at a local LDS Family History Center (FHC), I've relied
on the paper versions of these research outlines for years! A
few years ago, they were produced on CD as "the
SourceGuide." These outlines are quite simply the best
advice from the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City on each
subject on such topics as:
- general genealogy research strategies
- the basics of doing research in a specific area
- what records were kept by the governing institutions (church
& state)
- types of records available through the Family History Library
- non-FHL resources, repositories, archives and libraries
- how to look things up in the FHLCatalog to order microfilm or
microfiche
- major indexes and collections relevant to the locality, even if
the FHL doesn't own them.
Note that this collection of resources also includes maps, listings
of local FHCs, foreign language word lists, as well as forms for
census extraction, pedigree charts and family group sheets.
THANKFULLY, these materials are now available on the
internet. I recommend printing out the outlines, maps and word
lists for each locality where you ancestor once lived. The
Germany research outline is 78 pages long, and worth 1,000 times its
weight in gold!
