Best
of the Internet for Genealogists:
Do-it-yourself Color Coded Maps
DearREADERS,
Last night's MIGHTYMOUSE segment of DearMYRTLE's Family History Hour featured a
web site I learned about from AudreyK, a participant in our Genealogy For Lunch
Bunch.
Do-it-yourself Color Coded Maps http://monarch.tamu.edu/~maps2/
You choose to create a state map, or US map with the following options:
-
create
a TITLE for the map (I chose FOY FAMILY IN FLORIDA)
-
color-code
up to 6 groups of counties or states (I chose FOY Immigrant, FOYs in 1700,
Revolutionary FOY, FOYs in 1830, POST 1850 FOYs)
-
Provide
a note to print at the side of your map in 8 point describing the purpose of
the map, etc.
To
select more than one locality per group, hold down your CTRL key when selecting
additional items on that list.
Then click near the bottom of the page to submit the request, and the site's
computer will generate a page which links to YOUR customized map.
HOW WILL YOU USE THIS MAP CREATING
CAPABILITY?
-
Print
out the map to include in your family history notebook.
-
Spotlight
counties where your ancestors lived, to view migration patterns.
-
Color
code all counties for occurrence of a single surname.
-
Plan
research strategies based on the birds-eye-view of the migration patterns
show for your family on the map.
THANKS
Audrey, for the heads up on this site!
Happy Family Tree Climbing.
