"CONRAD WEISER HOMESTEAD WILL OPEN NEW PERMANENT EXHIBIT
Brent D. Glass, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, will open a new orientation exhibit for Conrad Weiser Homestead, Route 422, Womelsdorf, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9. Admission to the opening ceremonies and exhibit is free from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
“This exhibit is the culmination of years of research and work by staff, volunteers and consultants, Glass said. “Conrad Weiser Homestead will now be recognized as perhaps the most significant destination for learning about Weiser and his contributions to our heritage.”
The new permanent orientation exhibit tells the story of Conrad Weiser (1696-1760), Pennsylvania’s “ambassador to the Indians” during a key period of Pennsylvania’s Colonial period. Weiser was a founder of Berks County in 1752, an early county judge, the commander of forts along the frontier, a religious leader, and a prosperous German settler.
The new exhibit includes period artifacts, handsome interpretive panels, and some reproductions. Located in galleries in three buildings at the Conrad Weiser Homestead—the Visitor Center, the Weiser House, and the Education Building—the exhibit explains Weiser’s role in Pennsylvania’s Indian diplomacy, his many and varied accomplishments, the importance of his property as a destination for diplomats and settlers, and the story of his wife and family. The exhibit also tells how the landscaped park and historic site were founded and developed.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks, staff and volunteers will guide visitors through the galleries, and members of the Weiser Battalion, a French and Indian War re-enactment unit, will demonstrate.
The Museum Shop, located in the Visitor Center, will be open throughout the day. Visitors can also enjoy the grounds, which include seven buildings and the Weiser gravesite, set in a 26-acre park designed by the world famous Olmsted firm of landscape architects.
Conrad Weiser Homestead, located midway between Reading and Lebanon on Rt. 422 at Womelsdorf, Berks County, is one of 26 historic sites and museums on the Pennsylvania Trail of History. The Homestead is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and supported by the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead.
