Family History Book Scams
From: rvdubel@msn.com
DearMYRTLE,
I don't remember the web site for scams, but today I have received a flier for
The Year 2003 International [Name] Family Yearbook. It came in a window
envelope with no return address, postmarked in Denver, CO. For people who
wish to order a book, a self-addressed envelope is provided, addressed to The
Family News, 1181 S Parker Rd Ste 105, Denver, CO 80231-2152.
If this is a new address, you may want to add it to your list of scams.
Thank you.
DearBOB,
THANKS for reporting this possible scam. Unsuspecting newbies in the world of
genealogy often get caught up by this sort of offer, believing that obtaining
their family history is a matter of writing a check. Any genealogy scams should
be reported to:
National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection Committee
http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comconsumer.htm
4527 17th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207-2399.
They maintain a list of offending companies. Read their article on the same page
titled: "PSST! Wanna Buy Your Name? -- Don't Let Them Take Your Name in
Vain!"
It is here that I found information for reporting this to the US Postal
Inspection Service, since mail fraud is a federal offense. The article
also provides the address of the National Consumer's League, if the company
fails to give a refund to those who discover the scam after purchasing an item.
You'll also want to report this to the famed INTERNATIONAL BLACK SHEEP SOCIETY -
GENEALOGY HALL OF SHAME
http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/shame/index.html
by writing to Scismgenie@adelphia.net
I have taken the liberty of CC NGS & Black Sheep on this e-mail for you.
