PAF2 Data to PAF4 or
PAF5
DearREADERS,
I received a cry for help from a friend on the other side of the county. She
had tried to get her genealogy database working. When I asked for the
particulars she replied: "PAF 4 and the discs I am trying to load are
from my old PAF 2. Does that help you help me?"
Yup, that explains it. I don't know of a single genealogy program that allows
you to skip 2 versions with smooth data import. Its not like Word,
unfortunately.
OPTION #1: (from http://www.familysearch.org/paf
)
Q: I have PAF 2.31. How do I convert the files to PAF 4.0?
A: These instructions also work for PAF 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3.
To convert PAF 2.31 files to PAF 4.0:
-
Run PAF 4.0.
-
Click on the File menu.
-
Choose Open.
-
Choose the folder you want to
convert to PAF 4.0. (this means you will just copy the files to your hard
disk using Windows Explorer)
-
Within the folder find the
INDIV2.DAT file. Open the file (either double click on the file name or
click on File and then Open). A screen will appear that will let you set
some options.
-
Set the options you want and
click Continue.
-
Type in a file name and click
Save. The program will convert the PAF 2.31 file to a 4.0 file and will
open the file onto the screen.
-
Note: PAF 4.0 and PAF 3.0 cannot
convert PAF 2.31 backup files. If you have a backup file, you must restore
it into PAF 2.31 before you can convert the file for use in PAF 4.0. (If
this is your situation, and you don't have PAF 2.31, you can call PAF Tech
Support 1-800-453-3860 and ask them about converting the PAF2 discs to PAF
4 and the going to 5. If the file isn't too large, they can walk you
through the steps to send it to them via email, or alternately you can
send the PAF 2.31 back-up files to them via snail mail. They will give you
the correct address.)
-
ALSO: New free download of
Personal Ancestral File 5.2. Newer Windows release in English. Features
include changes to the individual record to accommodate the wide variety
of naming conventions used throughout the world and the ability to type
names and places using characters from any language. (This version will
convert Personal Ancestral File 3.0 and 4.0 data files to its improved
file format. It also allows photos, etc. to be included with an
individual, and a variety of new and exciting reports, such as photo
pedigree charts, and books.)
I told my friend that I am still
available if she needs additional tech support. I wasn't putting her off, I
just don't have 2.31 anymore.
Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
