AOL will not support Mailing
Lists - Part Three
Some FREE Email Alternatives
DearREADERS,
YES, I am listening to you dear AOL members. You are obviously very frustrated
and don't know quite where to turn. I understand you wish to receive postings
from your genealogy mailing lists, such as those at RootsWeb. But now that AOL
won't support the incoming messages from mailing lists, what can you do? Set up
another email box, outside the AOL domain. There are some alternatives. This
email concerns keeping AOL, but finding an alternative web-based email service.
Using any of these suggestions means you will still "sign online" with
AOL, but you'll minimize AOL, and open up your web browser to go to the free
email service you select. These are the four free alternative email services
with which ol' Myrt here is most familiar:
(Click Mail, and set up a free account.)
(You've already got it if you have WindowsXP and activated your Windows
Passport. Please note "If your browser does not support JavaScript, you
can upgrade to a newer browser, such as Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6 or
Netscape 6..")
(Choose the free email, not the Premium.)
- Gmail.com (provided by Google) http://gmail.com
(This service is still in BETA testing mode. You must be invited by a
previous member. I have only 4-5 invitations available at a time, so I
cannot invite you all. We'd have to wait for this service to become a viable
alternative.
There are other email services which are quite
good, I just haven't personally used them, so I couldn't advise on "user
friendliness", etc. There is also the possibility that you might decide to
leave AOL and come up with an alternative method for signing on to the internet.
I'll discuss that in my next email.
