Locating Books: Morton Allan's Steamship Directory
See also: Readers' Feedback 9 March 2004

From: EDRibaudo@aol.com
DearMYRTLE,
I am trying to find a copy of Morton Allan Directory of European Passenger Steamship Arrivals. Can this information be obtained from the Library of Congress? If so, how can I gain access to this book? I am in Oklahoma City, is there any library or source in this area for that book?

DearEDWINA,

Any time you wish to locate a book, look in the online catalogs of libraries you are likely to visit. WHERE do you find links to those library websites? I recommend visiting:

LIBDEX http://www.libdex.com/
"Worldwide index of library catalogues, web sites and Friends of Libraries pages Libdex is a directory of library home pages, online catalogs, friend's pages, and affiliate links. Libdex - Index to 18,000 Libraries." I looked at the catalog for Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library System, and did not find the book. LIBDEX listed these 13 links to Oklahoma City library online catalogs, so you must systematically check the online catalog for each one to eliminate a local copy of the book you require.

Perhaps you know from experience that one of these libraries has a genealogy department?

The specific book in question is a basic genealogy reference work. Consider purchasing one for your local public library through the publisher's website: http://www.genealogical.com/item_detail.asp?afid=&ID=80

Morton Allan Directory of European Passenger Steamship Arrivals: For the Years 1890 to 1930 at the Port of New York, and for the Years 1904 to 1926 at the Ports of New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore. Format: Hardcover. Pages: 268 pp.
Published: 1931. Reprinted: 2001 ISBN#: 0806308303.

You inquired about borrowing a book through inter-library loan. Its essential for you to do your homework and find a library that not only has the book in question, but is willing to loan the book to you through your local library. All too often, genealogy books, particularly those such as this "standard work" are considered reference books, and therefore do not circulate.

It might just be easier to give Tom Kemp a call at the Godfrey Memorial Library in Connecticut. He can copy the page in question, in addition to the title and copyright pages, and fax or snail mail them on request. I have heard him give this offer to many people, and I'm sure he will be happy to assist. Just tell him DearMYRTLE sent you so he'll charge you double. <grin>
