OCCUPATIONS: Bellyman in a Plant or Crane Works
From: Ann Ellen Barr ellen@barrfinancial.com
DearMYRTLE,
Does anyone know what a BELLYMAN was in a Plant Works or Crane Works (I couldn't Make out the Plant or Crane on the 1910 Census form. The Bellyman part is quite clear to read.
DearREADERS,
I certainly don't know what this job entailed. Any suggestion from readers would be greatly appreciated.
I have a friend, the local reference librarian, with an ancestress whose occupation is listed on the census as a "stripper." After the initial shock, she discovered this lady was indeed a lady, and that she worked at one of the Tampa cigar making factories, stripping the tough central veins from the tobacco leaves.
Happy family tree climbing!
Myrt :)
