Number of those in genealogy

From: E. A. Kaspar E-Kaspar@wiu.edu
DearMYRTLE,
I was making a speech this week on genealogy when someone asked me how many people were now into genealogy in the U.S. I was stumped. Two years ago I read somewhere that 35 million were conducting research in the U.S. But it must be many more now. Then I heard on the radio that genealogy was the country's second most popular hobby. (They didn't say what was first!) Have you read any numbers recently? I've been asked to write an article for the newspaper, so really would like an estimate...a guesstimate?

DearELIZABETH,

Some of the best numbers are from:

It is believed that more than 80 million Americans are currently actively searching for more information about their ancestors."
