Tennessee Resources
From: KELLYFRANK@aol.com
DearMYRTLE,
Would you know of some books of Tennessee census and otherwise. Thanks.
DearFRANK,
Everton's HANDYBOOK for Genealogists (10th Edition) explains that "there were no
state or territorial censuses taken by Tennessee, however there was na 1897
census for Memphis." This means that you'll be relying on the US Federal Census
records as follows:
-- 1810 (Rutherford & Grainger Counties only) ; 1820-1880, 1900-1930 census
images available in part at Ancestry.com, HeritageQuestOnline through
Godfrey.org, or as in the case of the 1880 freely searchable at
FamilySearch.org, with clickable links to the free Ancestry.com census images
online.
Researching ancestors from Tennessee is greatly facilitated by the following
online resources:
-- TennesseeGenWeb http://www.tngenweb.org/
Here you will find a marvelous collection known as the "Tennessee History
Project" which includes:
There is also a valuable "Godspeed's County History"
(1887) transcription found on the site:
http://www.tngenweb.org/goodspeed/
. This should flesh in some background information on the places where your
ancestors once lived.
-- FamilySearch.org has the following "Research Guides" and "Research Outline"
composed by experts at the Family History Library who know how to do Tennessee
research:

Not sure WHEN your people lived in Tennessee, nor
their ethnic background. However, if yours were early, perhaps these two books
by
Vergil D. White will be useful:
-- Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files. (FHL book 973
M28g, vols. 14, index is in vol. 4.) "Lists soldiers, and often spouse and
children. Source is for entire U.S. About 431,700 names." (Annotation by FHL
Family History Library Catalog online at
http://www.familysearch.org.
-- Index to Revolutionary War Service Records. (FHL
book 973 M22wv, vols. 14.) Lists nearly all the soldiers in the U.S. who served
in the Revolutionary War. Prepared from the United States Adjutant General's
Office's General Index to Compiled Military Service Records of Revolutionary War
Soldiers, Sailors (FHL films 882841898).
You'll want to see what's available from these publishing houses, and then
determine if you can locate a copy through your local public
library:
