Robert Ragan sent out a newsletter recently about writing your family history.
His on-line tutorial fits in with your message here & is very good information,
I think, especially for anyone new to doing this on-line or on the computer.

Thanks for pointing out Robert's step-by-step directions (with screen shots)
for:
-- finding a part of your pedigree online and downloading a GEDCOM file
-- downloading the PAF Personal Ancestral File program
-- importing the GEDCOM file into your PAF database
-- creating a book using PAF
I'll send a copy of this to Robert to let him know how highly we think of his
work!
