Internet Genealogy Topics - Part 3

Getting a Picture from a Web Site

submitted by DearMYRTLE@aol.com

1. Find the desirable photo on the internet. (I picked this one of my granddaughter Aubrey Keele from our MyFamily.com private family web site.)

2. Right click on the photo itself.

3. Click "Save Picture As..." on the pop-up menu.

4. Specify file name and folder on your hard disk (and make a note of this!)

5.  In PAF or FTM you can specify adding a photo.  Just remember WHERE you put the photo, as each program is odd enough to require you to provide the exact location of the desired item! Using this same method, Barbara Schulz was able to include this cemetery photo with her ancestor's info in her Family Tree Maker database.
Hamilton K. Moore Civil War Marker from the private Moore Family Web site at www.MyFamily.com.
and Jim was able to save this photo of his father, Leonard Allen Pierce Foy.

Putting a Picture on a MyFamily.com Web Site
submitted by DearMYRTLE@aol.com

Sharing a photo or scanned image of a document about your ancestor is facilitated when you have a web site such as www.MyFamily.com . Here's how we added a photo to Jim Foy's private Foy family web site:

1. We logged in to the Foy Family Web site providing our user name and password.

2. Clicked on "Add Photo."

3. Clicked the "Browse..." button to locate a photo to upload, one by one.

4. Clicked the "SAVE" button.

5. One by one we were prompted to provide a name for the photo, date taken, place, and comments. We clicked another "SAVE" button as we completed each task.

6. Photos are editable (for brightness, etc.) and the info can be updated as you learn more.

Genealogy Research Suggestions: Massachusetts

A denotes Myrt's recommendation of an outstanding resource!

DearREADERS,
Alice Eichholz, PH. D., C. G. in Ancestry's Red Book: American State, County & Town Sources tells us that:

"Most school children know that the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod in 1620 and went on to establish Plymouth Colony. Though not the first permanent white settlement in the New World, its impact, based on the experimental ideals of freedom of religion and self-government, has certainly been felt, as has that of its neighbor to the near north, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, established in 1630. During the “Great Migration” between 1630-42, an estimated twenty-thousand of people left England and arrived in these two colonies which eventually merged in 1691, to become the Province of Massachusetts.

Concerning Massachusetts vital records, Eichholz continues:

"No state in the Union can boast the depth and breadth of vital records sources that is available in Massachusetts. Starting with the arrival of the Pilgrims, vital events have been diligently, although not completely, recorded, preserved, and published. By legislative order, 206 (out of 364) towns had all their vital records to 1850 published. The volume (or volumes) in this Systematic Series for each town is divided into births, marriages, and deaths, then alphabetized by surname and then given name."

The following well-regarded books on early Massachusetts settlers are available from the publishers, as well as at major libraries throughout the county, including the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

ADDRESSES - I hesitate to include addresses, because beginners seem to feel that if they merely write to a society or library, their research questions will be answered. With that caveat, I must include the following. One may order original vital records of the late 19th and 20th century from the state archives. The other organizations will become known to researchers as having an impact on family history as either an archive, library or publisher of excellent reference works. FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG  - Massachusetts - see also FamilySearch.org - Be sure to review DearMYRTLE'S Using LDS Family History Center Lessons located at: www.DearMYRTLE.com - Since most beginning genealogists don't realize what's available at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake and by microfilm/fiche rental through local FHCenters, I've included a running count of the number of items per topic from the LDS Family History library Catalog for the state. As you can see, you'll be mighty busy getting through all of these items before you can say "They don't have anything on my ancestor!" To top it all off, they are adding thousands of books and microfilms each month from individuals, churches and other repositories from all over the world. This means each year when the new card catalog comes out on CD or on microfiche, you'll have to check it again! See also the test site for LDS FamilySearch: www.familysearch.org

The scope of DearMYRTLE's US State Research Suggestions is to briefly note starting points for researching a particular area using Internet and real-world resources. Since basic research strategies are not included, it is advisable to have gone through all of Myrt's Beginning Genealogy Lessons located at: www.DearMYRTLE.com/lessons.htm

As you progress in your family history research, you’ll discover other excellent resources for the Massachusetts. Feel free to share your experiences with Harold and me. We’d love to report on your progress to our other readers! We know that new things are being unearthed all the time. More indexes are being added to the Internet every day!

By sharing information we’re each better prepared to face the challenges of climbing our family trees!

Changes in SourceGuide's Research Outlines
NOTE: This article first appeared as a part of DearMYRTLE's Daily Genealogy Column, located on the web at: www.DearMYRTLE.com

Many have written to note that when the LDS Family History Library's web site went through its revision this fall, the old links don't work for the research outlines. GOSH, its so hard when this happens, because all of us columnists and web site link indexers have to scramble to try to update our referenced links.

Accordingly I've updated my column titled "LDS Research Outlines" located at:
http://www.dearmyrtle.com/00/ldsoutlines.htm

There are extensive guidelines at www.familysearch.org that warrant your attention:

Research Helps: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rhelps.asp

Research Guidance: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rg.asp

Online writers do have an advantage over print media genealogy authors, in that the old paper copies of columns can't be updated with the new web addresses. <sigh>
