Printing a Pedigree Chart - Family Tree Maker (submitted by DearMYRTLE@aol.com) This software program is available from www.familytreemaker.com .

Since over 300 local genealogists will need to print a 4 generation pedigree chart (or fill one in manually) for the DNA Project on Feb 10th, I thought we might include step-by-step directions for doing this, using our two most popular genealogy programs.

1. After opening Family Tree Maker, go to PEDIGREE VIEW, but clicking the button shown at left and selecting STANDARD as the layout design.

2. Locate yourself in the index, by clicking the INDEX BUTTON, then typing in your surname (or maiden name) then scrolling to double click on your name in the listing. This puts you in position #1 on the pedigree chart.

3. Click the word FORMAT on the menu bar, and select TREE FORMAT.  Then verify that the following settings have been selected before clicking OK.  Although you can submit the pedigree chart for the DNA BYU study in any layout, this one perhaps provides the most concise printout.

  • Book Layout

  • Fishtail

  • Center

In my case the boxes for each ancestor now only contain the first name, middle name and last name.  You may or may not have to modify the content to include birth locality, if so, skip to step 5.

 4. If you must modify what appears in the box for each ancestor on the pedigree chart, click CONTENTS on the menu bar and select ITEMS TO INCLUDE IN EACH BOX. The build the list as shown above.

4.1 - Select 1 available item.
4.2 - Click the > button to add the item to the list on the right. Repeat 4.1 & 4.2 until you have included:

  • First Middle Last

  • B: Date in Location

  • Christening

  • M: Date in Location

  • D: Date in Location

  • Cause of Death (I added this as an after thought, though not necessary.)

4.3 - Click OK, to have FTM rebuild the pedigree chart with the options you specify.

5. Press FILE on the menu bar, and select PRINT ANCESTOR TREE.  If your pedigree chart covers a large number of pages (in my case, 73) then  you may only want to print say ten pages, and then decide to also submit a GEDCOM file of your database on floppy disk.

NOTE: For GEDCOM assistance, go to HELP on the FTM menu bar, select SEARCH FOR HELP ON... then type in GEDCOM.  You can print out HELP topics by clicking the PRINT button on the HELP TOPIC screen.

Printing a Pedigree Chart - PAF Personal Ancestral File (submitted by DearMYRTLE@aol.com)

Using PAF 4.0 (since most of members of the Manasota PAF Users Group have not yet been able to download PAF 5.0 from www.familysearch.org ) the process is fairly simple.  PAF 5 UPGRADE NOTE - Your editor just downloaded and installed PAF 5, and it would appear that directions for printing a pedigree chart are the same as with PAF 4.

1. Put yourself in position #1 on a pedigree chart. You may need to click the FIND button on the tool bar and locate yourself in the alphabetical listing.

2. Click FILE on the menu bar and select PRINT REPORTS.

3. You'll be taken to the following screen, where specific choices are to be made before clicking the PRINT button.  I selected the PEDIGREE TAB:

then select:

Even though the pedigree chart in the background doesn't show the details for each individual until you do a "mouse roll over" the pedigree chart will print out with the details of birth, marriage & death dates and localities. If your pedigree chart covers a large number of pages (in my case, 68) then  you may only want to print say ten pages, and then decide to also submit a GEDCOM file of your database on floppy disk.

NOTE: If you'd like help creating a GEDCOM file, click HELP on your PAF menu bar, and select HELP TOPICS then select the INDEX tab, and type in GEDCOM. Then select CREATING GEDCOM FILES...
