ROOTSMAGIC - Creating a Book Submitted by Pat Richley, instructor, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com Ultimately, you'll want to take your genealogy database and print out a book to share with family members. From the HELP menu in RootsMagic we read "The RootsMagic Publisher allows you to create a single document comprised of multiple reports and charts. This document can include narrative books (modified register, etc), pedigree charts, family group sheets, and more. The document can also include a shared index and sources covering all the chapters in the document. To create a book, you add chapters to the document, and arrange them into the order you want them printed. You can select various options for the Book, and then click the "Generate book" button to actually generate the document. -- You must have a Book file selected (either new or open) before you can begin adding chapters or making other selections. Important note: Since a Book’s chapters are specific to people in a certain database, using a Book created from one database with a different database can lead to unexpected results." Following the HELP instructions, I was able to set up a BOOK by clicking PUBLISH on the menu bar, and choosing NEW.

Then its just a matter of adding chapters, moving them up and down on the list, determining if you'd prefer blank pages at the start of new generations, etc. The "Chapters - ADD" options include:

Clicking the OPTIONS buttons including Layout, Sources and Fonts give you additional flexibility in your presentation.

You'll need to decide if you'd prefer direct printing to the screen/printer, an Acrobat Reader file or a word processor file. I suggest that you try each option, with a short sample of two or three chapters, to compare your results. It will probably prompt you to go in and clean up your notes (where older PAF versions of your database only allowed 1/2 page width text, etc.) Check for uniformity of place entries like NC or North Carolina. Whatever you do, you'll want to fix up the database so such things are consistent.
MARCH MEETING cancelled in favor of a FIELD TRIP to see George K. Schweitzer! Submitted by Pat Richley, instructor, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com The Alliance of Genealogical Societies of Southwest Florida's annual share fair, which is always scheduled the first Saturday in March, despite our protests, is featuring someone so spectacular, that I asked everyone if they wouldn't mind taking a field trip instead of holding our usual PAF meeting on March 6, 2004. Registration begins at 8:45am, while the program begins at 9:30am. Dr. Schweitzer's topics include:
Civil War Genealogy
Rivers to Trails to Roads to Canals to Trains
Finding Your Ancestor's Parents
and an extra-special "open question and answer period"
The cost is $35 including a buffet luncheon and all handouts. We
plan that you will pre-register on your own, but meet at 7:30am to carpool at
our usual stop -- K-MART on Cortez Road near 41 South. We will leave promptly at
7:45am, period. The event will be held at the Cultural Center of Charlotte
County, 2280 Aaron Street, Port Charlotte, FL. Travel time will be about 1 hour.
REGISTRATION FORM: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flagsswf/registration.htm
Print this out, write out your check, and we will place it in a manila envelope
to send down in bulk right after our PAF meeting, if you are interested.
