OCLC WorldCat Free Access? Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com .. Folks have written to me asking WHY the OCLC is not free as described in Dick Eastman's Newsletter in January 2004. The answer is highlighted in his posting: "OCLC is a well-known brand name among librarians but is rarely seen at genealogy conferences. At GENTECH 2004 the company had a prominent booth that demonstrated WorldCat, a cooperatively-created catalog of materials held in more than 7,600 libraries in the United States and elsewhere. These libraries have catalogued their regular collections as well as many special collections and digitized materials devoted to local history. WorldCat normally is a "for-fee" service that you can only access from a subscribing library. However, attendees at GENTECH 2004 were offered free access from home until February 29, 2004. Even better, the OCLC folks agreed to extend that access to readers of this newsletter for the same time!  To try this excellent online database, go to http://firstsearch.oclc.org. When prompted, enter an Authorization Code of 100-271-707. Then use a password of: OCLC."

PAF Logs of Changes from postings on the public genealogy mailing list, LDS-WARD-CONSULTANT-L@rootsweb.com, Sent: Monday, April 12, 2004 9:00 PM. Screen shots added by your editor from her own PAF Log of Changes.

From: "Pat Bergener" brgnr@ix.netcom.com
I just got back from an extended trip to California (went for 10 days, ended up staying over 2 months!) and I'm trying to wade thru all of the piled up e-mail collected in my inbox! I was also trying to remember just where I had left off in my f.h. [family history] research and then remembered the "log changes" file in PAF [Personal Ancestral File] (go to "Tools", select "Preferences", then "File". If the "Log Changes" box has been checked, you can go to "View" and it will give a list (sometimes a very long list) of changes made to your PAF file) > I scrolled down to the end and was able to pick up right where I left off!

My log starts with 11-05-2003, the day I got my Flash Drive. I had been using backups to work on my daughters' computers when I would be visiting,
but every time you restore from a backup, it wipes out the old log. I have a lap-top but it is too difficult for me to manhandle the case into the overhead compartment or under the seat on an airplane. I don't access the log very often, but it would be great for those members who go for long stretches of time not doing anything of their family history, and then want to get started again but can't remember what they were doing!

From: "Donna" angelchatter@shaw.ca
Pat B., That was interesting, thanks for sharing! First time I've gone into log changes. Curiosity getting the better of me, I clicked "flush" and wondered what would happen..... learned the hard way ....... it deletes the list! haha Never knew that existed so I guess I won't miss it too much but will log changes in future and will share with others.

Editor's Note: I had not turned on this option yet. So after clicking the check-mark box to turn the option "on" I decided to do the global search and replace as described in the next article. Then on returning to  "Tools> File>" I found the buttons to "View" and "Flush" were activated.

When I clicked "View" I saw a detailed list that looked like this:

4-29-2004 08:10 Mod Ind 3
4-29-2004 08:11 Mod Ind 7
4-29-2004 08:11 Mod Ind 9

4-29-2004 08:11 Mod Ind 30
4-29-2004 08:11 Mod Ind 31

The reason the last number (Record ID) is in numerical order, is that  I had just completed a "Global Search and Replace" described below, and each individual's record was changed where applicable, in numerical order.

Global Search & Replace - PAF Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com . . Do you sometimes "rue" the day when you began doing this family history stuff? First they wanted everything abbreviated (SLC, SL, UT) and now that our computers are more sophisticated, they want everything written out (Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA). Well, the genealogy programs are also more sophisticated and can help you with the task.

IN PAF 5.2+ you click "Tools" > "Global Search & Replace" then specify MULTIMEDIA FILE NAMES, PLACES OR DATES.

Legacy 5 Has an Update 12 April 2004  Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com  . I opened Legacy Family Tree just now, and it prompted me to look for an update, since it had been 83 days since I last checked. Sure 'nuff, there was an update, which I promptly downloaded. Before installing, I was reminded to "close all programs" before proceeding. This includes disabling my anti-virus software. It only took a few minutes. No problemo.

Global Search & Replace - Legacy Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com  . Searching and replacing outdated data is much more easily facilitated with Legacy 5+ than it is in PAF. Click "Search" then "Search & Replace" and you are faced with a fantastic screen with myriad options

including searching a lot more fields, than PAF's three options. The default where the program will search is the "Surname" field, but the drop down button provides the ability to change that to virtually any field you would use to input names, dates, localities, and some notes. I'll demonstrate this option at the meeting on Saturday.

RootsMagic - Search & Replace Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com  . YES, RootsMagic also has a very sophisticated global search & replace feature. Access this by going to "Search" then "Search & Replace". It also has a drop down menu with 19 fields that can be considered for this type of editing.

Genealogical Codicil to Your Will Submitted by MPAFUG member Bob Jones, GenBobJFLA@aol.com  This came to me from another mailing list I am on and I thought it was a terrific thing. I am sure you are all like me and have spent hundreds of hours gathering information, it would be a shame to see it lost in the next generation. Hope it does some good.

Genealogical Codicil to My Last Will and Testament

To my spouse, children, guardian, administrator and/or executor:
Upon my demise it is requested that you DO NOT dispose of any or all of my genealogical records, both those prepared personally by me and those records prepared by others which may be in my possession, including but not limited to books, files, notebooks or computer programs for a period of two years.

During this time period, please attempt to identify one or more persons who would be willing to take custody of the said materials and the responsibility of maintaining and continuing the family histories. [If you know whom within your family or friends are likely candidates to accept these materials, please add the following at this point: "I suggest that the persons contacted regarding the assumption of the custody of these items include but not be limited to" and then list the names of those  individuals at this point, with their addresses and telephone numbers if known]

In the event you do no find anyone to accept these materials, please contact the various genealogical organizations that I have been a member of and determine if they will accept some parts or all of my genealogical materials. [List of organizations, addresses and phone numbers at bottom; include local chapters, with their addresses, phone numbers and contact persons if available as well as state/national contact information and addresses]

Please remember that my genealogical endeavors consumed a great deal of time, travel, and money. Therefore it is my desire that the products of these endeavors be allowed to continue in a manner that will make them available to others in the future.

AniMap - U.S. County Boundary Historical Atlas for Windows Submitted by MPAFUG instructor Pat Richley, Myrt@DearMYRTLE.com  If you are looking for a large collection of period maps, AniMap is your best bet.  You can print out these maps and include them in your family history. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS - IBM PC compatible with Windows 3.1 or higher. VGA or SVGA display. Double speed or faster CD ROM drive, 16mb Memory minimum. Mouse required. Uses less than 1mb hard disk space if data files are accessed from the CD. Installation options allow you to put maps and database files on your hard drive for convenience and faster access. AniMap Version 2.5 - $79.00. http://www.goldbug.com/store/page1.html From the web site "There are latitude-longitude overlays built into the program as well as the ability to overlay the map for one year on any other. New in version 2.5 are overlays for railroads, waterways, and township/range grids for the public land states." Myrt here has version 2.0.1, so I will be able to demonstrate all but these very significant overlays. After all, when considering migration patterns, the railroads and rivers played a big role.

The CD is required in the drive, unless you've loaded the entire collection on your hard disk. Then its just a matter of choosing your state. Cinsder the following options.

1. The earliest map for the state/colony is show on the screen.

2. Scroll to double click on the year your ancestor first showed up in the area.
OR
3. Remain at the earliest known date for a map, then click the run button on the left, and observe as the map gradually changes with each passing year. You will see the county boundaries change, with tiny red county initials showing up on the map. The description of what's happening in the upper right corner.

Its possible to start with your ancestor's year, and go in reverse, to understand the county jurisdictions prior to his or her arrival.

By clicking "Overlay" on the menu bar, you may modify the map to include the options you desire. (Remember the newer version has overlays for railways and waterways.)

    2. If removing the brackets did not work, or if that instruction was not applicable, read the next section: "The URL (Web address) I have for a Web site doesn't work."

The URL (Web address) I have for a Web site doesn't work.
    1. Look for a ? or # in the last segment of the address. If there is a question mark in the last segment, remove the ? and everything behind it; if there is a # sign, remove it and everything behind it. Keep removing one segment at a time until you have a valid address.
    2. By looking at the original address, you should be able to follow the links to the address you need or want.
