Manasota PAF News Printed Report Problems -- Truncating Localities Causes Confusion submitted by Elsie Naylor, genelsien@aol.com When printing my family group sheets using PAF 5.0, a number of places, i.e. City, County, State or Country print out truncated. I am using the column LDS ORDINANCE DATA. How can I eliminate the column LDS ORDINANCE DATA, and will this cancel out any truncation of place names? ANSWER: Try clicking on the TOOLS option on the PAF menu bar. Then select PREFERENCES. You'll be faced with a dialog box that looks like the one pictured below. This program can be configured to still track LDS Data on individual and marriage entry screens, but merely turn them off when it comes to printed reports, such as the family group form you mentioned. This should provide enough room for localities to be spelled out, thereby avoiding those confusing abbreviations sometimes created by the software.

"Personal
Ancestral File 5.2 (build 5.2.18.0) is a new Windows®-based version of one
of the most widely used genealogical management programs for home computers. The
new software program can be downloaded free from the Internet. PAF 5.2 does not
provide genealogical data. Instead, it helps users organize their family history
records. It can produce, either on screen or on paper, family histories,
pedigree charts, family group records, and other reports to help users in their
search for missing ancestors. [Find it at www.familysearch.org.] PAF Lessons: Online & Downloadable from the README.rtf file showing up when installing PAF 5.2. "Lessons are available for Personal Ancestral File from the Help menu. The lessons cover typing in your family, making changes, notes and sources, printing reports, sharing files, match/merge, and advanced focus/filter. You may download or copy the lessons when you install Personal Ancestral File, or you may use them at www.familysearch.org/paf. The lessons are available in English only. The lessons require a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. If you have an older browser, you will also need the Flash player. If you have Windows 98 or later, you probably have the Flash player. If not, you can download the player free of charge from www.macromedia.com. A link to this site appears on the first page of the lessons. If you do not have Internet access and if you do not have Flash, you can run the lessons, but you will not be able to use the Show Me and Try Me buttons." MRIN LIST -
I can't seem to print it?
submitted by Elsie Naylor, genelsien@aol.com
I want to print out a
list of MRIN (marriage record identification) numbers. I tried to
do so by clicking icon RIN/MRIN Search on the PAF 5.0+ Tool Bar, then choosing Marriage
MRIN > MARRIAGE LIST > OK. However, I cannot find a way
to print the list.
What is Personal Ancestral File Companion? from the README.rtf documentation showing up when installing PAF 5.2. - Personal Ancestral File Companion is a utility program designed to print high quality genealogical charts and reports directly from Personal Ancestral File. The program is available only in English. Personal Ancestral File 5.2 prints many of the same reports as the Companion, though the Companion prints them in a different format. The Companion also prints some reports that Personal Ancestral File 5.2 does not, including:
Version 5.2 of the Companion works with Personal Ancestral File 5.2. The editor's call today to PAF support came up with a good reason to use PAF Companion 5.2. There is at least one important reason to use PAF Companion, see the next article. Why can't I print empty boxes on Family Group Sheets when a family has only one or two children. submitted by Elsie Naylor, genelsien@aol.com If one of my FAMILY GROUP SHEETS only has entries for a Husband, Wife and one child, the FAMILY GROUP SHEET does not print the rest of the form due to the fact that the rest of the event boxes would be empty. How do I get a printout of a full page showing empty Event Boxes. On the Reports & Charts Screen under Family Group I have checked the option "Print event boxes when blank" but the boxes are still not printed. What else needs to be done? ANSWER: Your editor called PAF Technical Support Thursday and discovered, that one must use PAF Companion 5.2 if you wish to print family group sheets with the blank boxes for additional children in the family. In fact, the person on the phone stated one lady was convinced that PAF was in cahoots with the paper manufacturers because of the wasted paper. WHAT difference does it make? Most of us know at least one person and their parents. Lets say that you only have data on a son and his father. PAF 5+will not print out blank boxes for the mother or additional children in the family on a family group sheet. WHY could this be a problem? Let's say you have the information on the father and mother, and and one child, as with Elsie's example. Suppose you wish to send this to a distant cousin so he can fill in the blanks. IF that cousin knows of additional children in the family, there is simply no place to write in the information on the family group sheet. What options ARE available when printing a family group sheet in PAF 5+? There are two options that might help you save ink, and print fewer pages when working up family group sheets on small families. As you are ready to print the family group record, click FILE on the PAF menu bar, select PRINTED REPORTS, then click the tab for FAMILY GROUP. Notice in the example below, that you may specify that the empty boxes will/will not print, and you can force the notes to begin printing on the first page of the family group record. Printing notes on the first page, is useful when you have a small family. No more wasting half a page of blank space. However, the definition of the option PRINT EVENT BOXES WHEN BLANK might pose a question in your mind. It sure did to me, until PAF Technical Support explained that:
Organization Ideas During Saturday's meeting we'll view about ten minutes of Painless Organization for Genealogists featuring Sharon DeBartolo Carmack. This 60 minute video can be purchased from www.123genealogy.com for $15.95. EASY PAF 5+ Source Citations submitted by Pat Richley Foy, MPAFUG instructor, dearmyrtle@aol.com I've created two forms to hand out at Saturday's meeting to help us prepare for research trips, and to transcribe information about a document we collect on our ancestor. You will note that the transcription for is arranged inthe same order as the fields on the PAF 5+ new source screen illustrated below:
Computer Clock Getting Behind? submitted by Barbara Schulz, bjsgen@aol.com . Its about that time of the year to remind our members to check their batteries this and the fact that my computer had wrong date on it yesterday brought it to my mind (Wonder if that's a problem on my computer or if it just got off track with date). FROM KIM'S "KILLER TIP OF THE WEEK" www.kimkomando.com "Q. My computer clock no longer keeps time. Sometimes it loses a few minutes; other times, hours. What's happening? -- Greg in Portland, listening on KXL 750 AM A. Sounds like your battery is running out of gas, Greg! Better jump into the computer and replace it! The battery is located on the motherboard. If you're lucky, it will be about the size of a nickel, and be held in by a small clip. You can easily replace it. Check your computer manual. If you're unlucky, it will look like a barrel. It will be soldered in. You'll probably want a computer shop to replace it. In addition to the clock, the battery powers the CMOS chip and BIOS settings (CMOS stands for "complementary metal oxide semiconductor," while BIOS is "basic input/output system.") You'll see a reference to these settings when you boot up. It will say something like, "To enter Setup, press Delete." The settings tell the computer what equipment is present, and how it interacts. When the battery conks out, the settings are lost and your computer is in trouble. Some people advocate changing the battery every few years, just to be safe. That's fine if it's the easy kind; if it's soldered, wait until it dies. Regardless, to protect yourself, print out the BIOS settings. Go into Setup and press Print Screen. The settings have to be reset after a battery change, and you'll need that information. You can get a new battery at an electronics store. Good luck!" Upcoming Events
